You will be astonished at the size of the World War II Essex Class aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1943, the USS Lexington served the United States longer and set more records than any other carrier in the history of naval aviation.
The Lexington earned her nickname, "The Blue Ghost," after the Japanese reported the ship sunk no less than four times. Yet, each time she returned to fight again, leading the propagandist Tokyo Rose to nickname her. The name is a tribute to the ship, her crew and air groups that served aboard her. It isn’t to uncommon to meet a proud veteran who once served on the USS Lexington visiting or telling stories of their time on “The Blue Ghost.”
There are five self guided tours on the USS Lexington covering 100,000 square feet and 11 decks. You will see the aircrafts that took off and landed, anti-aircraft guns, Pearl Harbor Exhibit, the officer quarters, and so much more!
Things to Know Before You Go to the USS Lexington
- Open 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. Closed on Thanksgiving & Christmas day.
- Located at 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd., Corpus Christi, Texas 78403
- Expect a lot of walking and climbing; comfortable shoes are a must.
- As a formal US Navy vessel the ship has very steep and narrow stairs and ladders. Make sure to wear clothing that is NOT revealing, ie: dress, skirt.
- Give your self time. The aircraft carrier is much bigger then it looks and many people end up spending more time there than expected.
