The history of horse racing in Kentucky dates back to 1789 and no track embodies the spirit and legacy of the sport like Churchill Downs. Opened in 1875 by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Churchill Downs has become the center of the horse racing universe and is home to the Kentucky Derby, the longest continually running sporting event in America, as well as the Kentucky Oats. The track has undergone multiple massive renovations and expansions over the years to accommodate the more than 170,000 visitors on the day of the Kentucky Derby. To put that in perspective, attendance was just 10,000 in 1875. Even if you're unfamiliar with racing, you've likely seen the Twin Spires that have become a symbol for the track.
